Fundraising ideas Getting organised Where your money goes

Let everyone know

  • Do you want to increase the amount of money you raise for Macmillan Cancer Relief?
  • Do you want to invite other people from your town or village to your event?
  • Do you want to increase support for your event?

The more support you get, the more money you will raise for people living with cancer. You can publicise your event by encouraging local newspapers and radio stations to talk about it. Just follow these simple steps.

Before your event

  • Two to three weeks before your event, fill in the gaps on the pre-event press release (pdf, 16kb) – they can be personalised easily
  • Find out the names of all your local newspapers (including the free ones). You can do this by either having a look in your local newsagents or checking out the local phone directory or the internet
  • Make a list of the newspapers that cover your area and find their telephone numbers (many of these will be in the newspapers themselves or again the telephone directory or internet will have these)
  • Call each of the publications you wish to issue information to and ask for the contact name of the News Editor. Note this down and also if you need to check the address. If they do not give a name simply mark your correspondence to the News Editor
  • Print off enough press releases for each of the contacts
  • Send a press release to each of the contacts / publications. Some may accept email attachments so you could send them this way if you prefer. Do remember to keep a copy of the press release for yourself in case anyone calls you with any questions
  • You can if you want also follow up the release with a phone call to the News Editor just to let them know that if they require any further information or pictures etc then you are more than happy to help.

The above steps can also be carried out for the local radio to get coverage on air. For this simply follow the same steps but send information to the forward planning desk.

Tip: Take some photos of people having fun at your event, making sure there is some Macmillan Cancer Support branding in the picture if possible e.g a poster, mug, t-shirt or collection box.

After your event

  • Fill in the gaps on the post-event press release (pdf, 16kb) and send it and the photos to your local paper
  • If you don’t manage to get any photos, you can still send the release out - don’t forget to send it to your local radio stations too!

Don’t forget - using the local media to publicise your fundraising can really increase the number of people who attend, how much money you raise and what Macmillan can do to help people living with cancer.
